June 2008 Gardening Tip
  • Let's hope our warm weather is here to stay! There is still plenty of time to plant both vegetables and flowers. We have plenty to choose from. Give your flowers and vegetables a fertilizer like "Bud and Bloom", which is a water-soluble fertilizer that encourages blooming? Great for your annuals as well as tomatoes! Don't forget your hanging baskets.
  • Cool damp weather will bring out the slugs! If you see holes in the leaves of your plants and you don't see any insect’s slugs are most likely your problem. Slugs feed at night and leave large holes in the middle of the leaves. Use slug bait like "Sluggo" or "Deadline". Be sure to sprinkle the bait around the plant about 18" away from the plants DO NOT put the bait any closer or on top of the plants! It attracts slugs they eat the poison and die.
  • Now is the time to put weed and feed on your lawn. Put it down on damp grass when it is not going to rain for forty-eight hours. Weed control will not be effective if the temperature is below 55.
  • Keep an eye on your garden and landscape plants for insects. We have a large selection of insecticides, both organic and chemical, to use to eliminate any pests you might find. Remember how bad the beetles were last year? Don't forget to put out your beetle traps towards the end of the month.
  • June is the time to put down the season long grub control. Don't forget to do your planting beds and perennial gardens too! Grubs can be anywhere in the soil.
