Tips on planting Fall Blooming Bulbs from the experts at Gerlach's Garden Center
PLANT ALL BULBS IN FULL SUN
Three types of fall blooming bulbs will be coming in Mid August 2010. Plant these dormant bulbs right away!
First, the Giant Colchicum should be planted 4" deep and 6-9" apart. In September a leaf less, light lavender flower will surprise you. They will grow to 8-10" tall & 3-4" wide. Next Spring lush, leafy foliage will grow for a few weeks then die back. These bulbs are large and sell for $5.95 each.
Second, the Water Lily Colchicum also blooms in fall with foliage next spring. The Water Lily Colchicum is a 3-6" amethyst pink double flower about 6-8" tall. This dormant bulb should be planted immediately and sell for $5.95 each. These look great in a rock garden!
Finally, the Saffron Crocus (dormant bulb) should be planted 3-4" deep and 3-4" apart. These small bulbs sell for .50¢ each and bloom in fall with a purple flower about 4" tall. Harvest the red anthers and dry. I spread mine on a paper plate until dry. Store in an air tight container. The dried anthers are very expensive and used in cooking but you can easily grow your own and save $$
